The view from our train

The view from our train

Today, we traveled from Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland on four different trains. Although we had seen many of the views before on the way to Chamonix, they were still breathtaking. Zermatt is higher in elevation and is more chilly than we have been used to. There are no cars in the city, only bikes and small electric taxis. Zermatt is also home to the Matterhorn, the mountain featured on the Toblerone bar.

Some light yoga!

Some light yoga!

While waiting to check into our hostel we did some light yoga to help stretch our muscles and get loosened up after so much traveling. After finding out we couldn’t check into our hotel till 4 o’clock we had a free afternoon to explore the town. We all chose to eat lunch at a pizzeria. The pizzeria had great food and we kept entertained by all of the birds entering and exiting through the doors. At one point. there was even a bird that ran straight into two windows in a row. It took lots of convincing from other group members for someone to not go lead the bird outside. Many of us also chose to go into many of the little souvenir shops. It was nice to see some of the homemade items and to pick up some gifts for people at home.

Since today was a travel day, we took this time to recover from previous hikes and to rest up for our overnight hike that is coming up in a few days. We met up in the evening to discuss a reading and reflect on our experiences so far on the trip. Getting to see glaciers up close has caused a lot of us to change how we think about them and about how important they are for many people’s cultures.
